Untitled Short Story by Demarris Evans

I come from a land of the underdog. a place where I was never meant to thrive. A place where many things were set up for me to fail. There were no movies starring people who looked like me. There were no comic book heroes who looked like me. etc.

Instead, people who looked like me were called lazy, stupid, inferior and ugly. We and I were not championed in any way. We were the bad guys/people. And the opposite people were the good people. the opposite people were smart, brave, industrious, beautiful and hardworking.

That was supposed to be the reason they – the opposite people, were on top. Even though I was on the bottom, somehow I knew that the story about why was false. I wanted to learn the truth about why I was on the bottom.

I looked for the truth everywhere. I looked inside books. I looked inside movies. I looked inside stories told by people who were elders. Slowly and over time I began to learn that the story had been made up to justify a huge, horrible truth. That the opposite people had used people like me for their own benefit.

And even though the truth is starting to come out, no one wants to talk about it. Both peoples are ashamed for different reasons.

I plan to tell this truth to everybody so that no one ever has to go back to this land ever again.
