PRIORITY DEADLINE: Monday, June 3, 2019

FINAL DEADLINE: Monday, July 1, 2019

Note: We encourage you to save your answers to this application in a separate document BEFORE you hit the submit button, just in case you have any problems with submission so your work does not get lost.  We will send confirmation of your application within a few days of your submission, so you can rest assured your application has been received. Thank you for applying!

Thank you for your interest in returning to the API Jam. As you know, this event is intimate and personal, and we want to hear where you’re at today. As a result, our questionnaire is longer and more in-depth than most. Please share as much as you feel comfortable. There is no min/max length for responses and no pressure. We only ask you to share what you feel is ‘enough’. We will follow up with more questions via email or a phone call if we think we need more information.

And please keep in mind that as much as we’d love to have everyone back, we want to make this experience available to as many interested people as possible, which may mean we are unable to accommodate some alums. We’ll be considering the length of time since your last jam, the composition of new participants, and your application itself.

Also, please note that all of your answers, including your name and basic info, will be kept confidential.* Only the API Jam organizers will have access to your application. The more our team learns about you, the more informed our decisions can be throughout the selection process.

    * If you are selected for the Jam, only your name and bio will be shared with the other participants of the Jam, and that will happen just prior to the event. Following the Jam, we will put this same information up on our website so that you can participate in the alumni community, unless you request otherwise. More info on this is below.

    Who You Are

The people in the room are the focus of the Jam. Sharing our stories, experiences, dreams, and challenges, through different formats, is how we engage and learn together. The following series of questions is meant to be a taste of this principle. Don't worry about spelling or grammar or eloquent articulation, or what is politically or spiritually correct. We just want to get a sense of who you are and where you are at this time, with the understanding that we are all ever-evolving, so no answer is a fixed answer. Please know that we, too, are exploring questions these questions ourselves — even as we ask about them! We look forward to entering this exploration together.

How do you identify? (gender, race+ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, class, anything else that makes you who you are.) We ask because we value diversity and the opportunity to create supportive and inclusive space, and we want to know how to best meet participant needs:

What's alive for you these days? What are you working/playing on? How are you feeling? (Please check in) :

How have you been integrating learnings, insights, healings, etc., from your last Jam? How have you been collaborating with folks since your Jam?:

Could you please share the reasons you want to come to the Jam again? What are you hoping to give this time around? What are you hoping to receive?:

What does "API solidarity" mean to you? What does it look like, feel like, conjure up for you?

Please share any concerns, fears, or reservations you have about attending the Jam. This can include what kinds of support you feel you could use from us right now, and also if/when you join us in August:

Please give us a mini-bio (a paragraph version of your story) written in the third person (for example, using “they,” “she”, or “ze” instead of “I”). Talk yourself up! Include contributions you’ve made, any awards or accomplishments, organizations you’ve been involved with, etc. This is the bio that will be shared with other participants of this Jam. (You can always modify it later.) :

Anything else you'd like to tell us?:

    Costs of Attending

Tuition to participate in the Jam is offered on a sliding scale of $500-$1,500. The actual cost of participation is $1,000, of which $500 covers your food and lodging costs at the Watershed Center for five nights, and $500 covers program costs, which includes organizing time, honoraria for facilitators, supplies, and materials. We invite you to give what you can and to give generously, as tuition costs provide our vendors and facilitators with equitable compensation, and any surplus supports partial scholarships for other participants. If you pay more than the at-cost $1,000 amount for tuition, that extra amount is tax-deductible.

Money should never be a barrier to applying: partial scholarships are available on a limited and first-come, first-served basis. We also invite work trades and monthly payment plans. We aim to figure out with each applicant the right combination of tuition, work trade and scholarship that can work for you. However, nothing happens without an application first. Remember, the sooner you apply, the better your chances are of receiving a partial scholarship if you need one.

We ask applicants to consider a minimum of $500 for their tuition. Again, we never want money to be a barrier in participating in a Jam, so we will do everything we can to make it work for you to attend.

Travel expenses are the responsibility of the participant, though we do help to arrange carpools from the airport to the Jam site. The NYC airports are good arrival points.

Are you or your organization in a position to pay $1,000 (or more) for tuition? If not, how much are you able to contribute (and what amount of scholarship would you require)?:

We invite work trades as well. Are there other non-monetary ways that you might be in reciprocity with the Jam (such as organizing carpools; spreading the word about the Jam via social media; offering photography, blogs, or videos at and/or after the Jam; organizing food donations; fundraising for scholarships; other in-kind contributions and skills, etc.)?:

If you are selected, we will be following up with you to ask about diet, housing, travel plans, etc. We want to do what we can to meet your needs at the Jam.

Thanks so much for taking the time to fill out this lengthy application! We’ll be in touch as soon as we can.

Thanks for applying to the API Jam!
